How to get a job in UK?

Working overseas is always a dream for many IT people and UK is one the preferred destinations.
In this blog I would like to share my experience using these points.

1)What is UK made of .... ?
Before coming to UK , you need to understand about UK and what it is made of . UK is combination of Great Britain, the northeastern part of Ireland, and many small islands.

Look below the link for more information.

2)What are different types of visa....?

If you want to work (any job including odd jobs) you need to have a visa. There are few types of visa's depending on what you want to do in UK. Tier - 1 Visa makes you eligible to work(technical & non technical) any where in UK.

These are the few types of visa.
For more information about the visa look at the link below.
http://www.ukvisas.gov.uk/en/howtoapply/infs/

You can always go through site and apply for the visa your self or make use of consultancies.

3)How Consultancies work in UK ..... ?
Most of the companies do their recruitment with the help of consultancies. When ever there is an opening , Information will be sent to the respective consultancies. Each consultancies will try to get candidates from the market and pass it to the companies. Consultancies can send limited amount of applicants so they try to get the best candidates who are reachable and looking for a change.

If you want to get a job in UK you need to be physically available in UK with a UK contact number.Resume/CV also plays a vital role in getting interview calls from the consultancies/companies.

4)How to apply for Jobs in UK .... ?
You can apply for jobs using Job websites. The process is quite straightforward. You need to get registered and apply for the jobs in your respective fields.

These are the list of job sites according to my knowledge.
Its always better to apply in multiple job sites to get better response.

5)What is must in UK before getting a job.....?
Apart from searching for job you need to take care of following things as soon as you land up in UK.
*Bank Account:
In UK you need to take care of opening a Bank account. Most of the companies will not open an account for you. You need to take care of your self. As soon as you join any company you need to provide the bank account information.
Most of the bank needs Identification proof and address proof for opening an account. For Identification proof you can provide your passport and for address proof you can provide any utility bill (telephone bill/ Gas bill / Elec bill ..etc). Few banks such as abbey/sandander can open a basic account if you have a valid passport and UK job offer letter.

*Medical:
Medical is quite expensive in UK and its more painful if you don't have a job. But in UK govt provides good medical services. To get benefit from this you need to get registered first to your local GP / NHS . Its quite simple to find GP/NHS in your location. You can search through internet / ask somebody for guidance.
To get registered you need to provide proof of identification and proof of address.

*National Insurance(NI) number:
Your National Insurance number is your own personal account number. The number ensures that the National Insurance contributions and the tax you pay are properly recorded on your account. It also acts as a reference number for the whole social security system. When ever you join an employer you need to provide your NI number and with out this salary will not be provided. For more information on NI and how to apply look at the below link.

6)What are the type of Jobs in UK.....?
In UK you have basically three types of Jobs.Permanent Job , Contract Job and Temp Job.
  • Permanent Jobs are treated as a long term job where you will be fixed employee and you will be getting paid on monthly basis. There is no fixed duration for this Job.This totally depends on employer and employee interest. The average salary for this job is between 25000-35000 £/ anum. It may change according to your skill set.
  • Contract Jobs are non fixed jobs where you will paid on hourly/daily basis. The average duration can be from 2-6 months. The average salary for this job is between 100-250 £/ day. It may change according to your skill set.
  • Temp Jobs are non fixed jobs where you will be paid daily/weekly basis . The average duration can be from 2-6 weeks.
7)What is TAX in UK and why it is important to know .... ?
If you're employed you pay tax on your wages through a system called PAYE (Pay As You Earn). Your employer uses this system to deduct Income Tax and National Insurance contributions from your wages before they pay you.

The taxable income includes,
  • earnings from employment
  • earnings from self-employment
  • most pensions income (State, company and personal pensions)
  • interest on most savings
  • income from shares (dividends)
  • rental income
  • income paid to you from a trust
There is no alternative for TAX . For example if you get offer as 30,000 pounds / Anum then the take home after Tax deduction would be 1885.30 pounds/Month .The Tax deduction will not differ company to company. Its been decided by UK govt and all the companies in UK must follow that . For more information about the Income tax click on the link http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/rates/it.htm , http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/index.htm.

Always calculate your take home salary once you get an offer .There are many websites which helps you to find how much is the taxable income and what is your take home salary. one of my favorite is http://listentotaxman.com/ . You just need to enter your annual salary and it display the taxable income and take home salary.

Hope this blog has made sense and gave good information on searching a job in UK. I wish all the readers good luck and better future .
